Reader comment on item: [The Issue of Compulsion in Religion:] Islam is What Its Followers Make of It

Submitted by S.C.Panda (India), Oct 14, 2004 at 06:17

Dear Prof Pipes,

1. Ayat 2:256 was mentioned and this purport to be arise as "No compulsion in religion". This Ayat is most used/abused by the apologists of Islam both Muslim and non-Muslim to protect Islam from the charge of brutal and uncivilised conduct against nonbelievers, apostates, blasphemers etc. No discriminating reader of Islam will be fooled by such apology.

2.The view of an ex-chief justice of Pakistan on Islam was mentioned. I should reiterate my "mantra" that howsoever a Muslim might have been intellectually equipped,he/she CANNOT express views on Islam objectively without coming out of the Islamic shell.

3.Islam has legitimised violence against nonbelievers without compunction or regret -- be it the Twin Towers in New York or the innocent school chidren and others in Beslan...

4.The brutal and bestial teachings of militant Islam and the resultant conduct should be fully exposed.

Regards, Sincerely, S.C.Panda
