Tariq Ramadan

Reader comment on item: [The Issue of Compulsion in Religion:] Islam is What Its Followers Make of It

Submitted by Dave Kabay (Australia), Sep 29, 2004 at 01:09

Though I agree Tariq Ramadan should not be allowed entry into the U.S. (see "not welcome sign" at http://rantburg.com/opinion/default.asp?id=28&D=2004-09-27), in his book "Western Muslims and Future of Islam", Tariq attempts to do what Daniel says in his last paragraphs: specifically "Muslims can decide afresh what jihad signifies, what rights women have, what role government should play, what forms of interest on money should be banned, plus much else". However Tariq is trying to make these changes from an organisational whole of Islam way rather than allowing an individual Moslem to do it. Given Tariq's lack of training at the main Islamic centres of learning and not being a Mufti or a Mujtahid or even an Imam, I don't give him a chance.
