Faith vs. Reason

Reader comment on item: [The Issue of Compulsion in Religion:] Islam is What Its Followers Make of It

Submitted by Ralph C. Whaley MD (United States), Sep 28, 2004 at 13:59

The essence of religion in all of its variations is Faith. Faith is a belief in the absence of evidence or in controversion of evidence. Human interactions can be conducted in only two ways, by persuasion using reason and making a case to appeal to the mind of the parties interacting or by force or threats of force. Persuasion must use evidence of the senses processed by man's faculty of reason to make a case.

Religionists, to the degree that they operate on faith necessarily appeal to force when dealing with those with whom they disagree because they reject evidence and proceed on faith. The history of religious-based actions clearly shows this to be true as demonstrated by the crusades, the Catholic Inquisition, the slaughter of the Albigensians, the hundreds of years of religious murders in the Balkans, the Catholics and the Protestants killing each other in Ireland and the Muslim assault on western Civilization that began in earnest in the 1970's.

Sept 11,2001 was the most destructive attack in this conflict but worse is to come unless and until America recognizes the nature of the conflict and launches all-out destruction against the primary enemy in this war. Iran's theocratic Muslim dictatorship, the nation primarily responsible, must be destroyed along with its ability to wage war. The remaining anti-civilization governments must be warned that they will experience the same destruction if they even contemplate harming America or any semi-free nation.
