Professors -- Teach, Don't Indoctrinate!

Reader comment on item: Conservative Professors, an Endangered Species

Submitted by Dutch Bialke, BS, MA, JD, LLM (United States), Apr 12, 2005 at 23:10

This issue has significantly less to do with whether a professor is leftist or conservative, and much more to do with whether any professor chooses to advocate one's self-held political views in the classroom (whatever such views might be). This is especially so in classes that do not have an obvious political underpinning (which, in my view, should comprise the majority of college courses). This said, the university setting is meant for learning, not indoctrinating. Professors, teach your students to think critically (to consider all sides of an issue). Don't espouse your personal political views as "the correct answer" in a vastly unequal power relationship -- that's cowardice.
