To the 'American Patriot' - it's that ...mentality that is at the heart of the problem Europeans have with the American administration and it's right-wing base. Europeans aren't naive enough to believe all Americans have your mentality but are confused when confronted with such 'patriotism' (arrogance in your case) towards such serious topics as the potential war in Iraq. Europe has seen enough war to have matured, enough bloodshed to suffice for the world hence the more mature outlook to the current crisis.

It's all very well to throw in the pathetic and outdated 'if it wasn't for us during wwII...etc' routine but take a look around the world - why are so many countries and its people against America? It's not for it's amazing courage to stand up to an impotent country, it's not for its apparent freedom and democracy, it's out of the US' disregard for other nations and absolute arrogance in many cases (and yes, jealousy from crazed lowlifes is also a reason). Let me guess, you think Vietnam was a war worth fighting? Your govt. revoked John F. Kennedys order removing most military personnel. More servicemen and women were sent in to stop the spread of communism.

So what if they had communism? See anybody wanting to invade the US because it has democracy? Robert McNamara, one of the architects of that war, admitted in the 90s that it was a "mistake". Pretty big mistake. I could go on but I'm sure anything typed here would no doubt receive many excuses and insults against this statement.

What your govt. did after Sep 11 is waste the goodwill it had towards it. Such goodwill came from quarters like Iran which surprised all and how was it repaid? By inclusion in the intelligent 'axis of evil' speech. Instead of acting the cop where you're not wanted, act the psychologist or at least counsellor. It has better results in the long run but I think that's another problem of the US - to actually make an effort in this way takes to much effort and time whereas bombing...weak countries takes less of the two.
