I am by no means an anti American and have visited the country many times but i feel that the comments displayed here do not represent the views of most ordinary moderate americans.

I am British and am fiercely proud of my country's military history, including what was dubbed our "finest hour" during the Second World War. The Western Front in the Second World War was a triumph of British and American cooperation. Few Americans can see past a blinding screen of patriotism and see the war as a whole. Unfortunately America's attitude after 9/11 was typical, they became overpoweringly arrogant and out-spoken. This is the same reaction one can gain when questioning an American about their contribution to the Second World War.

There is no doubt that the Americans were a large presence in World War 2 but by the time they arrived the tide had already turned. It was the British who hung on for 3 long years beseiged on all sides by the forces of Nazism. We were attacked with everything that Hitler could muster. Yet through the hail of bombs, Britain rose up from the ashes undefeated. It was the British who defeated the Germans in North Africa, the British who supplied the Russians so they could carry on the fight, the British who captured the enigma machine, the British who organised resistance throughout Europe, and the British who stopped the Japanese advance on the borders of India. And all whilst the US were hiding in their own country trying to ignore the fact that the world was tearing itself apart.

May i also remind you that it was British intelligence that warned the US of the imminent Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour which typically the americans chose to ignore.

I am sorry to have a rant but sometimes i feel that due to Hollywood films and American patriotism, people ignore the huge sacrifices that Britain and her empire made to protect the freedom of the world. Try telling a British soldier who had fought the 6 years from 1939 to 1945 in some of the bloodiest battles of the war that he should be thanking the Americans for his freedom. I hardly need to tell you what his answer would be.
