The Atlantic seems even wider these days

Reader comment on item: Europeans: From Venus?

I have always appreciated Dr Pipes' insightful thoughts on radical Islam and the Middle East.

All the more reason to feel let down by this attack on Europe. Claiming that we're "weak" and "post-modern" leads to the crazy conclusion that we're strategically unimportant.

American operations need European support. British intelligence proved more efficient than the shambolic CIA operations before Sept 11th, which were recently condemned by Congress. And it was British marines and special forces who bore the brunt of the fighting in Afghanistan. Much useful information has come from Germany, Spain, Italy and France concerning Al Qaeda operatives in those countries. The US should not ignore European skills and connections.

American politicians fail to realise just how anti-American Europeans are becoming - and it's not just on the Left. Even in Britain, Americans are widely perceived as bellicose, arrogant, and ignorant of the world outside the US. This view would be confirmed if America alienated Europe.
