I don' t think its a fair statement to claim that "Islam functions reasonably well in many countries". Even the two countries that spring to mind as the best countries in the Muslim world- Turkey and Malaysia - are not without their problems. Turkey has historically expended a large amount of energy just to keep itself secular and derives a lot of benefit from its proximity to Europe while Malaysia would not be prosperous without its large ethnic Chinese and Indian population and its relative isolation from the Middle-East. And even in these countries Islam rears its ugly head time and again.

Looking to blame it on everything but Islam is a good way to fool oneself.
