"Pro-Life" Muslims??

Reader comment on item: Europe's Stark Options
in response to reader comment: Secularism = abortion

Dear Morpheus,

While I appreciate your commenting, it seems odd indeed to describe Muslim culture as "pro-life".

While trying not to entangle too many issues, I suggest that the reasons for the plunging birth rates in Europe and Russia are radically different. In the former case, one might argue a certain level of self-indulgence,. But surely an existential despair, as well as rampant problems of alcoholism, drugs, aids, and the collapse of the social safety net account for the latter.

I may be in the minority, but I think a gradual decline in the population of both prosperous Europe and Japan is not a bad thing, although certainly not problem-free in policy and social planning terms. In Russia the situation is different and is altogether a calamity.

Abortion is a painful and difficult issue, and my own acceptance of it has gone from 95% approval to about 51 %, but I will never be for taking away this right from women.

In any event it strikes me as slightly absurd to see a straight line disappearance of European in a low birth-rate, which can very easily if unpredictably turn around.

I also think that the West has something of a secret weapon in the uncontrolled demographic increase of Muslims, especially in Islamic States - although this development is also a double-edged sword with regard to the West.

On the one hand, Islam's virtual slavery of its entire female population leads to uncontrolled fecundity and a vast pool of potential terrorists, but it also means their own societies are apt to drown in unmanageable numbers, as several seem to be doing right now.

And as we are seeing in Iraq, this mindless terrorism can very easily and nihilistically turn inward.

In any event, I see no way to rationally talk of Muslims societies as "pro-life",

With regards, Ron Thompson
