Europe's response

Reader comment on item: Europe's Stark Options

The scenarios discussed in this article seem to address responses that may occur in each European country. It seems to me that there is an additional scenario.

This 4th scenario is that the European Union develops a European policy or policies related to Jihadist militancy. Such a policy would state that Militancy /violence on behalf of any religion as well as violence against any religion (hate crime) will not be tolerated. Patriot Act type legal steps would be implemented as a result of the policy. Europe-wide cooperation between and among European law-enforcement agencies (European Homeland Security) will be enhanced.

Militarily, NATO will evolve into a fast-action military agency modeled on the US's new approach to "4th generation warfare." This will be a highly adaptive and responsive force that can parry and thrust into various European domains as required. NATO also has more experience in peace-keeping than the UN. Legal prohibitions against the violation of the separation of church and state will be implemented. In essence a new organizational structure inside Europe could develop that is the foundation for the "Long War. " The scenario most likely to occur in my mind is that there will likely be a civil war or wars in Europe and attempts to repress the Jihadists and their supporters in some locales.

Ultimately, I think it is more likely that the Jihadists will dominate. There are many scenarios in their history where they have been outnumbered, but have prevailed. Religion trumps economics, political divisions and military indecisiveness. It is this single-minded devotion to advancing their agenda that will most likely result in conquering Europe unless a cultural shift occurs in the European approach.
