The American system cannot workReader comment on item: Europe's Stark Options Submitted by Octavio (Italy), Mar 13, 2007 at 05:03 People suggest that Europe is too secular, and that is the bulk of the problem. So, America is the country to be seen as a model for Europe. I see America as a country where religion is important, but that comes and goes. At the moment, America is ruled by people who put God first, and worship the Christian God and His Son. But this is a phase in American society; if Rudolph Giuliani becomes President, you will see another phase, with a pro-homosexual politician; if Hilary Clinton becomes President, you will see a pro-women politician. In Europe, we don't need to stress the importance of religion in public life. We know that Europe is Christian: look at the architecture! Look at the Cathedrals! The American system cannot work here, because we need to integrate Muslims into European society. Initially, the issue was to stop immigration from the Muslim world. I wish we had done that. Now, the issue is to make Muslims abide by the law. Muslims often come from poor African back-grounds and are more likely than the average European to commit crimes, riot, deal drugs, kill, rape. Therefore, we need to enforce the law. As for religion, I think that Muslims and Jews will automatically have to adapt to Christian morals. Take the issue of bigamy: no European nation allows it, and that is because of our Christian history. If a person wants to live in Europe, he can only marry one woman. In Europe, we don't have to emphasize the importance of Christianity, because it is self-evident. It doesn't have to be "on your face". But then, dear American friends, the USA Constitution also establishes a separation between Church and State, and that does not change the fact that America is Christian.
