Completely agree but...

Reader comment on item: Islam vs. Islamism (article)

Submitted by Lory (United States), May 13, 2013 at 11:56

That all makes perfect sense to me and I buy into it wholeheartedly. The only thing I don't understand is why you opened with a separation between leftists and conservatives, saying leftists attribute bombings such as the one in Boston to "violent extremism" or anger at Western imperialism, and yet you then go on to explain Islamism as just that, perhaps with more fleshed out nuances that the length of an article allows, but nonetheless an extremist interpretation of Islam which is indeed violent, and which has been encouraged by Islam's more recent failures in comparison to the Christian West.

I don't understand the need to invent a chasm between left and right on this issue, as if finding radical Islam abhorrent is exclusively in the domain of the conservative right. Perhaps you might educate a broader audience if you didn't put half that audience at arms length in the opening paragraph.

Daniel Pipes replies:

The chasm exists,I am not inventing it. Blaming jihad on the West for its evil actions is quite different from blaming jihad on Islamic doctrine.
