Re-Deploy Troops to Iraq Borders

Reader comment on item: Salvaging the Iraq War

Submitted by Rob (Saudi Arabia), Jul 31, 2007 at 06:35

I like Dan's idea of re-deploying US troops to Iraq's borders (Syria and Iran).

The fact that this was not done during the first weeks of the war - blows my mind. The very first thing any army does is to secure its borders, preventing infiltration before starting any mop-up operations. The fact that America's generals still don't get this - further blows my mind.

The worst that could happen would be that - deprived of incoming ammuntion and other outside assistance - the warring tribes would eventually run out of bullets and perhaps learn to tolerate each other non-violently. All without thousands of American heroes dying uneccessarily.

I watched dumb-founded during the first months of this campain not believing my eyes. Any high school student could have predicted Iranian incursions, Syrian cross-border operations and general Al-Qaeda mayhem. Why is it that America's military works with such predictably monotony ?

Rob.
