Daniel Pipes for President!Reader comment on item: Salvaging the Iraq War Submitted by Archimedes2 (Canada), Aug 2, 2007 at 00:20 Unfortunately I can't vote, being a Canadian. But the coalition needs clear-sighted men in control, who understand the value of strategic goals, and the human costs of mindless flexing of military muscle. Much as we'd like, the coalition cannot fix all of the world's problems. It cannot even fix all of Iraq's problems. But there are things we can do very well, and we should do them. What to do with the white elephant of an embassy being built in Bagdad--that's a tough one. It's probably not worth trying to sustain. Perhaps it could be handed over to any government able to maintain a semblance of peaceful democracy. But then, how does one avoid the almost inevitable scenario of having to storm that same fortress 15 years from now to remove the next totalitarian regime from power? Hopefully the presence in the desert and on the border has some influence over the future direction of things. One thing should be noted about DP's solution -- it is not short term. It is not even medium term. But then, neither is the Bush admin's current project, and while the commonly expressed alternative is short term, it is also bloody insane.
