Building houses on a swampReader comment on item: Salvaging the Iraq War Submitted by Dimitri (United States), Jul 24, 2007 at 17:06 Building Iraq is like building houses on a swamp. We can even have some temporary success, but finally everything will sink. Elections is like a modern highway, which is supposed to bring new life to the old swamp, but it is also on the swamp. In years and decades what we will see is not democracy but the same swamp without any signs of previous buildings. So untill some drainage is done, which means a substantial change of what Iraq is composed of, all efforts are in vain. The other point, if we need to influence the "strategically important" region. I believe the Middle East is as strategically useless as any other desert in the world. Europe lived without it for hundreds and thousands of years, and America is even further from there. The opinion that the Middle East is the key to the world dominance came to our "thinkers" from Arabs, who really believe their sand is very important.
