Salvaging the war not the final solution

Reader comment on item: Salvaging the Iraq War

America went into Iraq for the wrong reasons and with the wrong motives. Deservedly now America has a tiger by its tail. America is going to be badly mauled before it can let go.

But even if Iraq is resolved one way or another the major source of Muslim violence would remain

Bush is merely putting out bush fires by sending in troops to Afghanistan, Pakistan, or anywhere else for that matter. The fires will never be put out unless the source of these fires is extinguished.

The well spring of hatred of others can be found in the teaching that is imparted to Muslim children all over the world. The poison of dislike and even hatred of other religions that is part of school education can be seen from the educational curriculum of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

The madrassas that little Muslim children attend is another breeding ground for hatred of so-called kaffirs. Most of the clerics who teach at madrassas are children of very poor parents, poorly educated, unable to compete in the real world, jealous and bitter at the rest of society. Very few of them are fit to teach impressionable minds. And with the inflammatory material Islamic scriptures contain it is easy for these bitter minds to turn young minds towards jehad and shahadat.

Instead of spending billions on putting out bush fires, persuading or if necessary enforcing educational reforms in Muslim schools and madrassas would be a more efficient and long-term solution. Most of the jihadi Muslims are victims of the education they had to endure during their childhood.

A study of violence against non-Muslims in countries where madrassa education is tolerant of others would be revealing when compared with student attitudes in countries like Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
