US-Led Forces Out Of The Region

Reader comment on item: Salvaging the Iraq War

Submitted by Jahanshah Rashidian (Germany), Jul 29, 2007 at 03:58

Dear Mr. Pipes

When the forces of coalition decided to "liberate" Iraq from Saddam Hussein, their alleged aim was to help Iraqis to promote a secular and democratic country. Let's be honest to see how far we are from such a claim. Today, Iraq is governed by an US-backed Islamic regime. This regime is neither secular nor democratic; it represents the most undemocratic and the most non-secular political ideology, called Shi'ism.

I am not against a UN mandated removal of any dictator, including Saddam, but we know that the non-mandated US-led occupation was far from such a perspective. The current Islamic regime in Iraq is a strategic wish to fulfil the US agenda in the region namely a better access of US oil companies to Iraqi oil, Israel's security, and control of geopolitically important status of the Persian Gulf. The US apparently need an Islamic government in Iraq to reach these ambitions. Other wise instead of compromising with Ahmad Chalabi, ayatollah Hakim or other Shiite protagonists, the US could pave the way for an improvement of democracy and secularism. This of course would not take place; it is a similar idea of US Green Belt which preferred an Islamic regime in Iran to intercept a possible socialist revolution.

A complete withdraw of US troops from the region is a rightful solution. Instead, the US can help the UN to promote democracy, human rights and security in the region..
