short term vs long termReader comment on item: Salvaging the Iraq War Submitted by Andrew (United States), Jul 28, 2007 at 17:54 ... The essay misses one crucial, unavoidable, unmovable, and unalterable fact: as long as the US trades with undemocratic and oppressive countries, terrorists will attack the US while claiming to represent the oppressed, particularly when such countries are oil producing counties with Muslim majorities. Our long-term security interests require us to defend Iraq's democratic representation of an oil-producing country and trading partner. This is not just a matter of gasoline but every petroleum based products we use such as plastic. The sooner Americans understand this, the sooner we will take appropriate actions.
