Reader comment on item: Salvaging the Iraq War

Submitted by Tabark (United States), Mar 31, 2010 at 13:00

To the Editor:

I disagree with both positions. I believe that Iraq was a fine functioning country before the invasions began and should have been left in peace.

According to Dirk Adriaenssen, coordinator of SOS Iraq, "The Education system in Iraq, prior to 1991, was one of the best in the region; with over 100% Gross Enrolment Rate for primary schooling and high levels of literacy, both of men and women. The Higher Education, especially the scientific and technological institutions, were of an international standard, staffed by high quality personnel" In this study, the researchers concluded that education today in Iraq in in the downfall and that something needs to be done. According to Souad Al Azzawi, a writer for the Brussels Tribuner, "Poverty due to economic collapse and corruption caused partial malnutrition among Iraqi children. As was reported by Oxfam in July 2007, up to eight million Iraqis required immediate emergency aid, with nearly half the population living in "absolute poverty". Is it really necessary to have all these people suffering?

As an Arab-American, I believe that I should have an opinion on this political issue. I also believe that I should support my country in many positive ways. Everything that has happened in Iraq all these years has been a large misfortune and I hope that this will all change one day, not only for me, but for my parents, and all of my family that is still in Iraq to this day.

Sincerely,

Tabark
