Richard, interestingly enough Muslims seem to take the opposite view. They attribute their "backwardness", at least in part, to the failure to adhere to Islam faithfully enough.

This is not an exact analogy, but similar: despite Communism being a failure in every country in which it is practiced, believers in the Communist ideology will say that it is not Communism that is a flawed ideology, it is only not correctly implemented.
