Christian, Muslim, Mormon...

Reader comment on item: Barack Obama and Islam: An Ongoing Saga

It will be very interesting to try to get an idea leading up to the 2012 election of whether religion will play a factor in Americans voting. The issue is however that the religious affair divides along party lines. Those who believe that Obama is not a Christian were never going to vote for him anyway. Those who believe he is a Muslim, ditto. But the real question is : of those who think Mormonism is an issue, how many will not vote for Romney as a result?

If we are assuming that most of those who voted against Obama in 2008 will vote against him in 2012 (what has he done that would change their minds?) for whatever reasons they had for voting against him, be it religion, policies, ideology or race; then the thing that matters most is to what extent those who voted for McCain will still vote Republican even if there is a Mormon candidate. I do not believe that the independents who voted for Obama but who are less enthusiastic now will care about the Mormonism. The religious issue remains an issue mostly for the religious (unless you are talking t a liberal democrat who disapproves of all religions (perhaps with the exception of Islam because they are so misunderstood).

This comes down to who cares the most, the independents or the religious republicans?
