There may be more to Evangelical failure to identify Obama as a "Christian"

Reader comment on item: Barack Obama and Islam: An Ongoing Saga

Submitted by Peter Herz (United States), Apr 25, 2009 at 17:01

For many Evangelicals, myself included, not everyone who calls himself a "Christian" is one. For us "Christian" has a well-defined theological edge. Mr. Obama's identification with a church that puts a high stress on racial identity would impress many of us as heretical; just as Anglo-Israelism and white identity theology does. For us, it is impossible to believe in an Aryan Jesus or an African [or African-American] Jesus because the first page of the New Testament tells us that when God became flesh, he came as a Jew in 'Eretz Yisroel.
