no longer Christian and middle names

Reader comment on item: Barack Obama and Islam: An Ongoing Saga

Submitted by Rebecca Moulds (United States), Jan 25, 2009 at 13:37

Our country may have been founded on Judeo-Christian beliefs, but it has been sliding toward a nation of non-believers for some time, or perhaps there is a greater number to even out the balance.

Sure, Jews and Christians still exist, still practice their religions, but the numbers are dwindling, although in the Christian faith these nightmarish mega-churches seem to draw in the crowds in thousands. As for middle names, my ex-father-in-law had the middle name of "Omar" but he was not Arabic or Muslim. Granted, it was odd for a real London Cockney, and he said the name was handed down for many generations, that it didn't mean that he or his forebears were Muslim.

However, in Obama's case, I believe that he deliberately emphasised his middle name of "Hussein" during the inauguration, to kow-tow to the Muslims in this country and abroad. This lacked subtlety and shows his character, which is a blend of naivity and insolence. That he was brought up a Muslim and given a Muslim name, is a controversy that is still hovering over him, although he claims to be a Christian now. I believe that he is using his middle name to further his agenda with Muslims.
