By the way, Luigi, in your last post you asserted that "secular nations" try to "make people feel like their lives mean nothing...." Actually, I think that Christianity has perfected the art of dispiriting the common man and convincing him of his utter worthlessness far better than any secular society ever could.

Consider this: If I wanted to depress people, to make them feel dispirited and hopeless, guilt-ridden and miserable, this is how I'd go about doing it. First, I would convince them that from the moment they were born, from their very first breath on Earth, they were hopeless sinners. I would then go on to tell them that they were responsible for the death of a guy named Jesus [or Sam, Joe, Bill....whatever] and that this Jesus died for their sins approximately two thousand years before they were born!

I would then tell them that the only way to atone for this horrible crime of killing Jesus was to grovel before an imaginary being up in the sky every day, or at least every Sunday, for the rest of their natural lives and that if they didn't, well, the Invisible Man in the Sky was watching and would smite them in some really gruesome way when they least expect it.

Now just in case they weren't totally miserable and depressed yet, I'd then tell them that the fun really starts when they die. I would convince them that this life here on planet Earth is really nothing more than a dress rehearsal for the afterlife and that if they didn't do what the Invisible Man wanted them to do or if they even had the wrong thoughts inside their heads that they would, upon their physical death, be sent to a place called Hell where they would burn and rot and suffer and scream in agony for all eternity, so that there was effectively no way out of this celestial dictatorship that monitors your very thoughts and will use them to punish you. Come to think of it, the only reason most Christians don't kill themselves may be that they are convinced that if they they will be even more miserable in their next world than they already are in this one.

So you see, when it comes to instilling misery in people, well, the only competition Christianity has is another cult called Islam, and we don't even want to think about how bad that is.
