I think it needs to be said that not all Islamic people are in the same boat as maniacs like Osama bin Laden are very different from average muslims, and that even countries with monsutrous ideals like Iran are still subject to listening to the world. Defeating them in the Western term is impossible. The way I see it, the way to go would be to merge our ideas with theirs. If that had happened, riots from the Danish cartoons likely wouldn't have happened.
