in response to reader comment: You are all missing the point of islam

You cannot compare Christianity to Islam and then draw comparisons to Christianity 500 years ago, nor can you point to the American Bible Belt. I am not religous, but I have never heard of a global network of Christians out to establish a caliphate equivalent. Can you prove that?

The problem is that back int he days of unenlightened inquisition and/or Crusades (Christians were not the sole agressors in that conflict mind you, Muslims were too) the weaponry was swords and arrows. Now it's nukes. So we cannot simply fall back and wait for the muslim world to play catch up for the next 500 years.

I am catholic, and the problem with muslims is similar to the ones with catholics and the sex abuse scandal. Not enough priests and fellow catholics came out to condemn the abuse, just as not enough muslims today condemn terrorism. It leaves me wondering if it is a violent religion or if it is at all compatible with the west. I am no bigot, I am totally justified in thinking these things. Until I see some strong condemnations from fellow muslims, I have no choice but to think the worst, which is what I have been shown by the louder more violent sects which I can only pray are as small a minority as i think they are,
