a portend of frightening degrees

Dear Georges,

I do hope you are wrong about Europe needing America's help in saving Western Europe---again!! I met a very brave Malaysian woman, married to an American in the 1950's and a citizen of the USA, on a trans-Atlantic flight recently, who did nothing but praise America for "saving the world" (her own words) during WWII. She said if it weren't for the Americans, she might not have been alive today.

She, like me, had just visited family and friends in Scandinavia, and was very upset to learn that most Europeans in general are disgusted with the United States, scoff at our President, hate the general power of our military, criticize our economy. My father's cousin was killed in the Normandy invasion in WWII. My brother and brother-in-law served in Viet Nam.

Our soldiers have often gone into battle for other countries---even without the gain of oil--- and lost their lives because they believed in a free world. Any threat of more Nazism, Leftism, Stalinism, Islamism, must be met with bravery, not cowardice and complacency, otherwise our children and their children will be living in a new, hostile world where freedoms of any sort will be blotted out.
