Eritrea and the Islamist-Leftist alliance

Reader comment on item: [The Islamist-Leftist] Allied Menace

Submitted by Rob (United States), Jul 2, 2008 at 00:16

I read with interest your article on the Islamist-Leftist alliance. May I suggest that under its communist leader Isaias Afwerki, Eritrea belongs to this same alliance, given Afwerki's close ties to Iran. This alliance seems to lie behind Eritrea's recent attack on its neighbor Djibouti, which has strategic significance for shipping lanes in the Red Sea, and which hosts both French and U.S. bases.

Perhaps Afwerki wishes to send a message that an attack on Iran by Israel or the U.S. would lead to an attack by Eritrea on Djibouti for the purpose of disrupting Western access to Saudi oil traveling through a narrow shipping line in the Red Sea by Djibouti.

If Western access to Saudi, Iranian, and Venezuelan oil were simultaneously disrupted, the U.S. would suffer a serious economic crisis, which would affect both its will for military action and its available resources for such.
