Transigence and terrorism – thanks mainly to money from the West/world

Reader comment on item: Intimidating the West, from Rushdie to Benedict

I think that in order to assert themselves and do the things which they are doing, without much care what others might think or how others may react, Muslims/Arabs (countries) have to be in possession of plenty of resources/wealth to do exactly that. I don't hear of people in countries without much resources threatening or carrying out their threats on others.

The source of Muslims/Arabs (countries) wealth/resources is Oil, which everyone in the West/World is dependent upon as a source of fuel for their cars. At present there is no viable alternative to this. Although having the technological means to do so, the West is unwilling / unable to cut this dependency.

So, in effect, it is you and me (in the West/World) who are paying vast amounts of money to Muslims/Arabs, who are becoming increasingly intransigent, with many supporting terrorism and some actually carrying it out. And armed with the knowledge that the West/World depends on them, they can treat even great nations with contempt.

I believe this Oil dependency is the root cause for all this. If/when the West shows its will to cut this Oil dependency, by changing the fuel source for its cars or by some other technological means, only then will all this intransigence/terrorism end.
