How timely is this column!! Today's New York Times reports in a page one article entitled "Opera Canceled Over a Depiction of Muhammad", a major German opera house canceled performances of Mozart's "Idomeneo" after a scene that depicts the severed head of the Prophet Muhammad prompted an anonymous threat. The opera was first perfomed in 1781!

Whatever the Muslims are doing, it's working. Now, the West is engaging in self-censorship. We are devaluing our precious inalienable right to freedom of expression. We have got to stop living in fear. We have to stop living in fear of being called racists, imperialists and bigots. We must be prepared to fight for our inalienable rights, rights as Americans and rights as human beings.
