Reader comment on item: Intimidating the West, from Rushdie to Benedict
in response to reader comment: Response to a Muslim

Islam, like Christianity during the crusades and the Spanish Inquisition, was hard-edged and didn't tolerate much except their own views. That obviously changed as Christians realized what a crock that idea of us or them was. Muslims in the Middle East by and large haven't found this out yet, but they will eventually.

Our way of accelerating that process is provide education to them. Not propaganda, more like showing them how our world works and showing them that such biases are not bad in the eyes of God, they are how our world works and how they can improve their lives by finding the balance between Islam and modern civilization.

For Lebanon, Turkey, Qatar and the Emirates, this is already happening. it's happening in Iran too. The trick is to speed up that process.
