An atheist perspective

Reader comment on item: The Islamic States of America?
in response to reader comment: The US Constitution is not a sacred document

Submitted by Norman Conquest (United States), Sep 20, 2006 at 21:46

Here in Alabama - many bills promoting school prayer, teaching of creationism, the banning of reproductive rights, displaying the ten commandments, discrimination of homosexuality - come close to passing. With Christians totaling over 90% of the Deep South's population, it's a mater of time until some of these become law. It's very easy to see how a large majority can dictate the laws of a city, county, or state.

As an Atheist American, I have always held precious the First Amendment. The simplicity and fairness of maintaining the separation of church and state is the only safeguard to prevent a religious majority from seizing power and imposing its will on a minority.

I have as little desire to live under a fundamentalist Christian based government as I do for living under a fundamentalist Islamic based government. Welcome to my paranoid world!
