This is precisely the problem with Islam. If you have never taken any religion courses, then I suggest that you first do an in-depth study Islam vs Crhistianity. You better have a clear open mind if you start comparing the differences. Its not just the Western world which are affected by extremist, from which ever religion they come from. Please do yourself a favour and do study the Africa issue when it comes to Islam law and where-ever the muslims get in the majority.
