Reader comment on item: The Islamic States of America?

Submitted by Jonathan Usher (United States), Sep 23, 2004 at 07:12

In most of your articles you refer to moderate Muslims but I don't know how you define them. For me, Muslims living in the West and other Muslims must be distinguished. Other Muslims may be moderate if they disapprove of terrorism. Muslims in the West however should not only disapprove of terrorism, but also disapprove of Sharia law being imported into Canada (and the U.S. etc) and also support our democratic system. If a Canadian Muslim wishes to bring in Sharia law, he will completely change our value system into an Islamic one. In my opinion this goal should not be considered to be included within the framework of a moderate. A Western moderate Muslim should have the same respect for our laws and democracy that the rest of the citizens of Canada have. If not, he should not be considered moderate.

As an addendum, I would not consider a Communist or anyone else who wants to throw over the present democratic and legal system as a "moderate".
