"Freedom from fundamentalist Islam": Governments/Media cannot help

Reader comment on item: Why I Stand with Geert Wilders
in response to reader comment: Free us from ... islam

Dear Dr Pipes:

The reader "Army of Liberty" wishes for freedom from Islam. For those of us who live in modern democracies and observe the righteousness, non-symmetry, and hypocrisy of Islamists, it is not too difficult to see why someone will wish for freedom from Islam. I think it is not too long before even Islamic societies will realize that they need some freedom from Islam. Consider the people in Pakistan whose kiths and kins get killed in random bombings of muslims by muslims for muslims. The people will soon realize that somethings inside Islam needs to change and just blaming everyone else is not the solution.

But this change will not come from the governments or the media. Most democrtic governments do not have the courage to take a firm stand. Democracy need flexibility and flexibility is the opposite of firmness. Similarly, the media has its own interests to serve (making money is one such interest). The change will come when one person talks to the next or when one person chooses to change just a little bit. And the change will come when everyone chooses to oppose Islamists' hypocrisy as often as possible. This change will not come in a sudden tsunami. It might come very slowly. Almost continuously. It might already be occurring.
