David, from my life experience it was not Islam that undermined democratic institutions. My view is that large international corporations that pursue business goals regardless of nationality and culture did that. Their slogan is, the market, the cheaper solution rules, whereever it is, it is no longer the people of any particular country. Most striking of course with their call for cheap labour from muslim countries in the 60ies and 70ies in europe.
