Question for Dr. Pipes.

Reader comment on item: Why I Stand with Geert Wilders

Submitted by Steve Klein (United States), Jan 19, 2010 at 09:06

While I would warn Wilders and others off calling Muhammad a devil or calling Islam a "religion of the devil" or any of these sorts of things, I also find myself standing with Geert Wilders.

My question to Dr. Pipes is the following. What is an "Islamist"? What is "Islamism"? Is it (as George W. Bush maintained) "a fringe form of Islamic extremism that has been rejected by Muslim scholars and the vast majority of Muslim clerics; a fringe movement that perverts the peaceful teachings of Islam"?}

Daniel Pipes replies:

I have dealt with this issue many times, notably at "Islam and Islamism - Faith and Ideology,."
