We Don't live in an ideal world

Reader comment on item: Barack Obama's Muslim Childhood
in response to reader comment: um, excuse me--what facts?

Submitted by Rebecca (United States), Jul 8, 2008 at 18:39

Americans' paradigm on Middle Easterners changed dramatically and drastically after September 11th. The word "Muslim" took on very negative connotations, even to non-racist people. That is a reality, no matter how unfortunate

"You go to a mosque, you have Muslim friends/relatives, you are registered in grade school as a Muslim, you wear Muslim dress".... these are inescapable facts that belong to Obama. Nothing can change that. These facts have become powerful connections that will be conjured up when people pass judgement on Barack. It's innate human nature to perceive people we know very little about by their "trappings."
