American Republic - Government by Representation

Reader comment on item: Barack Obama's Muslim Childhood
in response to reader comment: Isn't USA a democracy?

Submitted by M. Tovey (United States), May 7, 2008 at 17:07

Just to clarify, the United States of America is a republic as formed by the founding representatives, though functioning through democratic processes. The distinction is made because so many tend not to remember such or are from outside this country and their information sources may not be correctly informed.

Further, if one were to take the time and read some of the supporting correspondence (memos and eMails in today's parlance) of some of those participants who helped in the forming of this country, one would see why being a believer in the Christian way of life makes more sense when reading the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution.

To try and run this country without the founding principles is like trying to buy things without money: it's what makes it run and why it won't without it.

Therefore the simple answer to the question is no. Were it a non-representative democracy, then anyone with military backing could take over with a coup d' etat, and yes, there can be religious implications in just such a case. How many times has the world seen a 'democracy' fail? This reader has lost count.
