Free Speech and the Right to Be Offensive

Reader comment on item: Barack Obama's Muslim Childhood
in response to reader comment: wrong conclusions

This is not the EU. Nor is it Canada or Saudi Arabia.

Here, you may debate a wrong impression, wrong interpretation, but, as of today, we still have the First Amendment and Freedom of Speech. Although this freedom does NOT include the right to use speech to incite violence, in other words, one may NOT say, Let's all beat up so and so tomorrow, or let's deface a synogogue, or bomb a church. There are, as yet, no anti-blasphemy laws in the U.S. though people are free to dislike anyone for what they say, or dislike their words.

Freedom of Speech, however, includes the right to choose whether or not to offend or to be offensive!
