Nura, you are incorrect that horrific abuse doesn't occur in Islamic countries. They don't have freedom of the press and of speech, so it's not reported that frequently, of course, but underground surveys suggest that it's common--and hidden in countries without such freedoms.

Most people in the U.S. thought attacking Iraq was uncalled for and most think attacking Iran also is uncalled for, unless they attack or indicate they plan an immediate attack on an ally that requests our help. Bush only got elected through family political contacts and maneuvering of the religious by Karl Rove.

Don't pretend women are not fighting for their rights in Muslim countries. The Queen of Egypt's tireless work is probably why they finally successfully passed a national law to stop female genital mutilation. They are slowly trying to get the right to everyday things, like see a doctor, travel, or drive without a man's permission.

Yes, it's slow. And it's too bad Bin Laden attacked the U.S. so Bush could overreact. Bush is no prize, but in his mind he was responding. Honestly, I was sorry Bush was elected, since he's a religious fanatic and elitist. But he has an inflexible personality, and once he has an idea, his mind cannot easily be changed. I saw that ahead of time, but those who were for him considered him "steadfast," and someone who wouldn't "waffle." Sometimes waffling is just pragmatism.

The fact is, that religious extremism is a cancer worldwide, and so are unbridled capitalism, socialism, monarchy, feudalism, and any other form of government that asserts itself on others.
