Iran will have nuclear ballistic missiles in less than a year

Reader comment on item: Prepare to attack [Iran]

By now no serious person believes that the American President George Bush will order his military forces to attack and try to destroy the Iranian nuclear weapons development program. In this vein, no serious person still believes that Israel will carry out a military venture against Iran either. The reasons for this reluctance involve:

a) the negative impact such an attack would have on the price and availability of Persian Gulf oil,

b) the fact that such an attack is probably beyond Israel's military capability, and would certainly make Israel even more of an international pariah state than she is even now, at least in Europe,

c) the fact that the last thing George Bush could convince his military and civilian leaders, as well as the American Senate, Congress, and American public to do is widen the Iraq War to include Iran,

d) the fact that such an attack on Iran would probably set off a hugely destructive regional war,

e) and the simple fact that Iran has certainly been preparing it's military and civil defences over a year for this very attack and

f) could well turn the attack into a rout for the attacking forces and thus they would fail to achievetheir goal,

g) the destruction or the setback of the Iranian nuclear program.

All of the above simply mean that very shortly Iran will have nuclear weapons, and shortly thereafter, if not before, the ballistic missiles capable of delivering them. The question will then be, how will the international community of democratic states react to this decidedly dangerous and potentially lethal development.
