Check page xx in Malise Ruthven's "A Fury For God" and his a scholar of Islam and he knows his Arabic, which you do not, and he defines the word nafs (pl.anfas) as and you guessed soul or spirit or being identity

But you know what is missing from your posts? references from qawamees or Arabic dictionaries and why is that? ...
