Reader comment on item: Bolstering Moderate Muslims

Submitted by CVT (United States), Apr 17, 2007 at 13:10

Dr Pipes,

You write: over the last three decades, the Saudi government has generously funded the export of the Wahhabi version of Islam. Saudi efforts have promoted "the growth of religious extremism throughout the Muslim world,"

How does any group, or network, combat the Islamists without toppling, either overtly or covertly, this family business known as Saudi Arabia? You can't believe they're going to change the tack their on, or reform themselves, can you? And what about the Law of Unintended Consequences if, or when, the House of Saud is consigned to the dustbin of history, just as the Soviet Bolsheviks were?

Good question. I worry that toppling the monarchy would lead to the even more extreme elements taking over.

The place to start, clearly, is to stop sending tens of billions of dollars to Riyadh for oil and gas.
