This is Not a Uniquely Canadian Problem

Reader comment on item: The Rot in Our [Canadian] Universities
in response to reader comment: The People's Republic of Canada

Submitted by Ryan Jamieson (United States), Mar 18, 2007 at 11:35

I'm a Canadian and I also graduated from York University in 2004. I was on campus during Daniel Pipes' visit. I deplore the "hate speech" laws we have on the books here. But as bad as Pipes' experience was during his visit to Toronto, you might want to do a bit of research of U.S. Universities (I'm sure Pipes will confirm this): your schools are just as radically left, if not more so in some cases, as their Canadian counterparts.

Moreover, many U.S. colleges have campus "speech codes," though doubtless such institutions cannot threaten actual jail time as is the case in Canada. My main point is that criticizing Canada per se is far too narrow and superficial to merit special consideration; this problem about which Pipes writes infects much of the academic world in general, and it is especially bad at the top schools in America, which often serve as shining examples for institutions in Canada to follow.

Sincerely, Ryan Jamieson
