Don't Let The Idiots Muzzle You

Reader comment on item: The Rot in Our [Canadian] Universities

Submitted by Michael Sweeney (United States), Jan 31, 2003 at 00:41

Dr. Pipes: Thurs. 1/30

It seems our lovely "tolerant" academics just can't tolerate opinions that differ from their own. It leads me to ask - If tolerance is such a virtue, why is it in such short supply when one disagrees with its prophets?

The behavior of both the students and academics at York University is disgustingly childish. That is how people on the Left (esp. the hard Left that dominates our universities) behave when one of their cherished orthodoxies is challanged. Universities were supposed to be places where ideas were introduced, debated and defended. They are now places where orthodoxies are presented as immutable law and all other opinions squashed as their adherents are reviled and silenced. The founder of the modern univerisity must be twirling in his grave.

It is tragic that this is the situation at our universities, and on NPR, PBS, CNN and MSNBC. As for you "Illegitimi non carborundom" (WWII American soldier for "Don't let the bastards get you down"). Thank you for your writings, and for posting on the NY Times Middle East discussion group. It is good to know there are people like you in the media and academia.

Sincerely,
Michael Sweeney a.k.a. NYTimes "TigerTank"
