Who's guarding the back door?

Reader comment on item: The Rot in Our [Canadian] Universities

Submitted by Jim Rivard (United States), Jan 30, 2003 at 23:15

The fanatic Islamists of the world brazenly grabbed our undivided attention with a huge bang and as we all fiercely looked abroad in the name of justice they sneaked in through the back door and hit us where it really counts. Our democratic ideology is slowly and quietly being metamorphosed into the very ideology we're intending to defend against. Here's the kick...theirs aren't the hands on the throat of democracy...ours are! They've turned us against each other, divided us into two camps, and now they're waiting in the shadows to ambush us with the conquering blow.

Are we missing the big picture here? Don't we even realize that the Islamists are winning? Have we been hoodwinked into thinking that deomocracy is a self-sustaining entity which needs no attention? Are we underestimating the cleverness of our enemies or have we simply become pathetic, self-loathing and guilt ridden because we know we're living a better life than those subjected to an evil ideology?

We need to remember who we are! We're a family and democracy is our name...we can't forget that. If any of our shameless brothers and sisters see fit to take it upon themselves to deny fellow brothers and sisters their inherent right to speak freely in debate we need to nip it in the bud and serve them a nice, frosty glass of justice.

We need to wake up and see what we're doing here at home. We need to go back and nurse our ideology back to good health. We need to man our back door or our gasping democracy will wither away without so much as a whimper.

Dr. Pipes, I sincerely applaud your bravery and I'd be proud if I could call you my comrade in democracy. Thank you for watching our back door.

Long live democracy and freedom!
Jim
