Round one, Dr Pipes!

Reader comment on item: The Rot in Our [Canadian] Universities

Submitted by Irving D. Cohen (United States), Jan 30, 2003 at 19:13

Congratulations, Dr. Pipes, on having won at least one round in your fight against the the so-called "students" and the pseudo- academics at York University! You persisted, and you made them listen to you.

The idea that, in a country as enlightened as our good neighbor, Canada, seems to be, a minority opinion, on any subject, can be kept from being heard at a so-called center of higher education is incomprehensible to me. For an invited speaker to have to wonder whether he is going to come through his talk without physical harm being done to him--and to need heavy police protection to assure that he will do so--is something new to our continent.

The administration of Concordia University should have acted to expel the Islamist students who prevented Prime Minister Netanyahu from speaking, and should have discharged, immediately, any members of the faculty who had aided or abetted any of the thugs parading as students in their resort to violence and threats.

There are not too many people who would have had the intestinal fortitude to face the York mob the way you did. THANK YOU!!! I am aware that, were it not for people like you, the Middle East faculties at many of our colleges would be burning books by this time.
