I grieve for my native land

Reader comment on item: The Rot in Our [Canadian] Universities

Submitted by John D. James (United States), Apr 23, 2004 at 18:02

As a transplanted Canuck who has spent all his adult life in the United States, it is with great sadness that I read all the comments from this censored experience of Dr. Pipes at York U. My Christian background is with the group that sponsors Trinity Western University, where Doris Darvasi is finding such academic freedom (it's also in my home area where I grew up). It was also my privilege to hear Dr. Pipes recently in Overland Park, Kansas (security needed there even in an affluent, upscale suburb populated by many Jewish families).

What is there more to say in light of almost every contributor agreeing fully with Dr. Pipes in the plight he found himself in? And to hear of such a statesman as Benjamin Netanyahu being forced to cancel his speech in Montreal only compounds the grief one feels for one's native country and its institutions having succumbed to the mentality of Hitler's brownshirts. All we can do is encourage Dr. P. to keep up his good work and trust that he (and Mr. Netanyahu) will yet be given the respect in many places that is certainly deserved.

Though the debacle is over a year old, it is a grievous thing to read about. Apparently both Canada and America are rapidly forgetting Edmund Burke's famous dictum:
"Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty."
