Reader comment on item: The Rot in Our [Canadian] Universities

Submitted by JSM (United States), Feb 5, 2003 at 21:33

I have long been taken by surprise by developments in Canada regarding issues affecting Jews. Canada is certainly a great free country. But if one follows Jewish news from Canada, not infrequently one finds both legal and popular opinions which one is at a loss to explain as anything but antisemitic and oblivious to obvious Jewish group interests. And I am not referring to pre WWII issues. Those , without doubt, were antisemitic in many ways as Richler so famously decried. But more recently as of the mid '70s a number of things have made me wonder about the level of antisemitism at the highest levels of Canadian society. The York and Acordia stories fit this emerging profile. It seems that the new immigrants from the Middle East and Moslem countries have found a sympathetic environment to express their implicit antisemitism in Canada. I am surprised that the Canadian Jewish community is not up in arms over these developments.
